Located between North and South Holland, Zeeland is often overlooked – yet hardly any other region in the Netherlands offers as much space, tranquility, and natural Dutch charm as this “land in the sea.” Islands, peninsulas, and open waterways characterize the landscape, which feels tailor-made for relaxing days on a bike.
Since we first added the Zeeland Route to our program in 2019 – at that time still with the MS OLYMPIA – it has quickly become one of our most popular bike and boat trips. Today, it is cruised by the MS NORMANDIE and continues to impress with a combination that can only be found here: lots of nature, fascinating hydraulic engineering, historic sites, and pleasantly easy bike paths.
Why is this tour a real insider tip? Here are five reasons that make Zeeland so special.
The vastness of Zeeland – dunes, beaches, and genuine tranquility
Zeeland welcomes visitors with a landscape that immediately slows them down. Walcheren, one of the region's most beautiful peninsulas, is home to wide beaches, light sand, and low dunes. This interplay of sea, wind, and open horizons accompanies many sections of the route and conveys the special feeling of freedom that is so typical of Zeeland.
The flat cycle paths lead through quiet coastal sections, small villages, and natural dune landscapes. Often the sea is only a few meters away, sometimes you can only hear it rushing – but the proximity to the water is always noticeable. A bike and boat trip through Zeeland therefore usually begins with a moment when you take a deep breath and realize: here, everything can slow down a little.
The Oosterschelde National Park: Nature between ebb and flow
The Oosterschelde National Park is one of the most impressive natural areas in the Netherlands. It is the largest protected area in the country and features a landscape that changes completely depending on the tides. At low tide, sandbanks are exposed, attracting numerous species of birds. With a little luck, you may even see seals basking in the sun. At high tide, however, the Oosterschelde looks like a vast, tranquil sea.
The stage around Neeltje Jans is particularly worth a visit. Here, nature and hydraulic engineering come together in a special way. The unique coastal landscape conveys a great sense of tranquility, while at the same time revealing how closely life in Zeeland is connected to the water. This mixture of unspoiled nature and human creativity makes the national park a highlight of the trip.
Did you know...?
...that Neeltje Jans was originally an artificially created island? It was built up during the construction of the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier and served as a central work area for the world-famous Delta Works. This structure is still considered the largest storm surge barrier in the world today. Visitors can not only see the impressive structure from the outside, but also get a glimpse inside and experience how the Netherlands has successfully protected itself against the sea since the storm surge of 1953.
Historic towns that immediately inspire
Zeeland surprises visitors with more than just its natural beauty. Along the way, you will find some of the most beautiful historic towns in the Netherlands, each of which adds its own cultural flavor to the journey. Zierikzee is particularly impressive. The town is one of the most important historic towns in the country and immediately welcomes visitors with its gabled houses, striking “Thick Tower,” and narrow streets. A short walk or a break at the harbor is always worthwhile here.
Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland, shows another side of the region. The city was once an important trading center and still has magnificent buildings, squares, and a lively city center. Cafés and shops invite you to linger before returning to the peaceful countryside.
One place that particularly delights many guests is Veere. The small harbor town has a charming historical backdrop and is beautifully situated on the water. As the MS NORMANDIE stays here for two nights, there is plenty of time for an evening stroll or a leisurely view of the marina.
A comfortable companion on the water
During this trip, the MS NORMANDIE is more than just a hotel ship. It exudes a pleasant tranquility that perfectly matches Zeeland. After a relaxing bike ride, you can end the day wonderfully on the sun deck while the landscape slowly passes by. The panorama salon offers plenty of light and space for cozy conversations or a coffee break.
There is a personal atmosphere on board. The crew is attentive and ensures that guests quickly feel at home. The cabins are comfortably furnished and offer everything you need for a relaxing week. In the evening, guests can enjoy a multi-course menu served in a quiet setting, rounding off the day in style. The MS NORMANDIE creates a familiar, relaxed environment that perfectly suits this trip.
A route that has delighted us for years
Many of us in our team have fond memories of the Zeeland route. Since it was added to our program, it has become a trip that we always recommend with confidence. The week is pleasantly peaceful, the daily stages are easy to manage, and the landscape changes at exactly the pace that makes a bike and boat trip so relaxing.
What we particularly like about this tour is its simplicity. The paths are easy to ride on, it's easy to find your way around, and there are many small towns along the way that invite you to take a break. For example, in Jachthaven in Herkingen, a quiet harbor town that is ideal for a short break. After the cycling stages, the ship provides a fixed framework that allows you to end the day in peace. Overall, this trip feels just right, without much effort or hassle. That's exactly what makes it a route that many of us like to choose again and again.
Our conclusion
For us in the team, the Zeeland route with the MS NORMANDIE is a trip that never fails to impress. The landscape, the quiet paths, and the clear structure make the week pleasantly uncomplicated. If you want to experience Holland from its quieter side, you will find exactly the right combination of nature, exercise, and relaxation here.
