Island hopping by bike and sail: Inner Hebrides, Highlands, Jura and Mull islands

Oban is the starting and ending point of your journey to the Inner Hebrides and the Highlands. You will visit the island of Mull, one of Scotland's most spectacular landscapes and still largely untouched by tourism, on the Flying Dutchman. The Isle of Jura, which you will also visit, is known for its rich population of red deer, and its distillery of the same name produces a world-famous whisky.

Enjoy Scotland's wild nature with its intense colors and great biodiversity. In the evening, treat yourself to a glass of whisky in a pub and listen to the sound of Scottish music, which you will encounter everywhere.

On your crossings with the Flying Dutchman, keep an eye out for dolphins and seals and let the impressive landscape pass you by. On the bike tours, you can observe eagles, red deer, and otters and look down on the sea from the most beautiful vantage points.

Tour details

You will travel individually by plane to Edinburgh or Glasgow and from there by bus or train to Oban. The cabins on the Flying Dutchman will be ready for you from 5 p.m. If you arrive earlier, we will store your luggage until you check in on board. You are also welcome to use our shared transfer service, which departs at 5:30 p.m. from Edinburgh city center and at 6 p.m. from Edinburgh Airport. You will get to know the crew and tour guides over a late dinner.

After breakfast, adjust your bikes and set off on the first cycle tour of your trip. This takes you south out of Oban through rolling countryside and along a small highland lake back to the sea. Crossing a lonely peninsula, you finally reach a ferry that takes you to the island of Luing. This is one of the so-called Slate Islands, for which the quarrying of the gray shimmering rock was once an important economic factor. For example, the University of Edinburgh is largely built from the slate of this small island. The Flying Dutchman is already waiting at the Toberonochy pier for the crossing to Crinan.

Today's round trip takes you from Crinan to the exciting archaeological site of Kilmartin. Stone circles reminiscent of Stonehenge and prehistoric burial mounds characterize the extensive grounds. After visiting the site and enjoying lunch in the beautiful museum café, you will return to Crinan. Passing the Kintyre Peninsula, famous from Paul McCartney's song “Mull of Kintyre,” you will continue by boat to the island of Jura.

After breakfast, cycle north on the Isle of Jura. George Orwell, who spent the last three years of his life here, once described it as the most inaccessible place on earth. Enjoy the tranquility of the island, which is only occasionally disturbed by one of the approximately 5,000 deer that live here. Passing the so-called Paps of Jura, you will arrive at a small jetty where the Flying Dutchman will take you across to the island of Mull. On the way, you will pass the Corryvreckan whirlpool, one of the largest natural whirlpools in the world – but don't worry, your experienced crew will take you safely and comfortably to a quiet bay on the island of Mull.

Today's bike tour is all about Scotland's impressive nature. The route takes you through hilly terrain and along the coast. Behind every bend, a new breathtaking view awaits you. You will share the road almost exclusively with sheep and shaggy Highland cattle grazing peacefully on the bright green meadows. You cycle along a varied coastal road past Loch Na'Keal to Salen. You spend the night at the quiet Salen Pier and, with a little luck, you may experience a beautiful sunset.

Today's bike tour takes you out of Tobermory once again to Glengorm Castle, which is located in an exposed position in the north of the island of Mull. The 19th-century mansion is an impressive sight, and you can fortify yourself for the return trip to Tobermory in the cozy tearoom. Then it's time to cast off one last time, and the Flying Dutchman will take you back to Oban through the Sound of Mull. Before dinner, you will have the opportunity to explore Oban a little. Mc Caig's Tower, an unfinished replica of the Colosseum in Rome, is a worthwhile sightseeing destination.

After breakfast, individual journey home or shared transfer to Edinburgh Airport.

The daily program depends on the weather conditions and the captain's instructions. Instead of a bike tour, a boat trip can be arranged at any time.

Please note: Due to the need to reach or leave the ship with the dinghy at some points, sure-footedness is required when transferring between the ship and the dinghy. At some ports, the ship must also be boarded or disembarked via a ladder at the port due to the tides. This involves overcoming height differences of up to 3 meters. Here, too, a certain degree of sure-footedness is required.

Embarkation from 6:00 p.m.

Disembarkation after breakfast by 9:00 a.m.

Minimum number of participants None, guaranteed departure.

Bringing your own bikes It is not possible to bring your own bikes on this trip.

Group pace On our e-bike tour programs, the pace is determined by the cyclists on the e-bikes.

Timetable and program changes are subject to change. If, for example, a route cannot be navigated due to low water, high water, or bad weather, the captain reserves the right to change the route for your safety (this is not a reason for free cancellation).
